The crew rose at 04:15 and cast off at 04:50 in order to be in position when the lock opened at 05:15. The lock was cleared at 05:30, and heading out into the open sea, a direct course to Cherbourg was set at 06:00.

The crew watched a pink sun rise over the calm sea in an emotional atmosphere as Weeki Wachee motored peacefully along the D-day beaches in the early morning light.

A straight course was followed under motor all day with a final turn to port to enter Cherbourg in warm sunshine at about 18:00.

Derek and Joe walked briefly round the town and ate good pizzas in a small cafe near the harbour before retiring early to bed at 10:30.
